The Craft

The Tadelakt Application Process

1

Base Preparation

A specialized, coarse lime base is applied over a cementitious backing and allowed to partially dry.

2

Plastering

Multiple thin coats of Tadelakt plaster are troweled on, with each layer carefully smoothed and compressed.

3

Burnishing

Before the plaster fully hardens, it is burnished using a specialized trowel — compacting the lime particles into a dense, slightly glossy finish.

4

Saponification

The signature step: olive oil soap is applied, reacting chemically with the lime to form calcium oleate — rendering the surface completely water-repellent.
